Alcohol Abuse
Alcohol is very often the drug of choice for kids and teenagers. Since it is a legal drug for adults, it is the easiest drug to obtain, especially if parents keep a stocked bar in the home for their own social activities.

Choosing a Young Adult Transitional Program
Placement in a transition program should honor the work the young adult has done in primary treatment or wilderness and build on that experience to strengthen the young adult's commitment to change. When considering young adult program options, there are some key factors to consider.

College Binge Drinking
Parents of college students who are heavy binge drinkers often don't realize their son or daughter is in trouble until their child flunks out of school. Binge drinking is defined as having five drinks in a row for males and four for women.

Drug Abuse Treatment Centers
It is very common for teenagers to experiment with drugs. Drugs are a way for teens to assert their independence and autonomy, in the same way that teenagers sneaking a cigarette used to be. Adolescence is a time for experimentation as a young adult strives to understand themselves and the world around them.

Admissions
NorthStar is a year-long program with a minimum six-month commitment of the student and family. We believe the six-month minimum is crucial to the success of our students to allow them time to integrate a whole new concept of themselves as sober, responsible adults.

Drug Addiction Treatment Programs
Treatment may include detox programs, behavioral therapy, counseling, cognitive therapy, psychotherapy, group therapy, and educational programs. Detox programs remove the drug from the patient's body while alleviating withdrawal symptoms as much as possible. Behavioral therapy teaches patients how to deal with drug cravings and how to find healthy ways to cope with their problems. It also teaches patients how to avoid situations where they may be tempted and/or exposed to drugs and alcohol.

What a Drug Rehab Program Does
Drug and alcohol addiction is a problem that is non-discriminatory. It afflicts people from all walks of life, all economic brackets, all ages, all races and nationalities. The reasons why some people become addicts are just as diverse. The one commonality is that addiction is very difficult to overcome and requires professional support and the commitment to remain sober. The goal of a rehab program is to teach patients how to live without drugs or alcohol. A drug rehab facility provides the resources to detoxify the body and the skills to remain sober throughout a lifetime.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab
If drugs and alcohol are an every day part of your child's life, then your child is addicted, either on a physical or an emotional level. Any kind of addiction is a lifelong condition. The greatest chance of recovery and continued sobriety can be found in drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs.

Early Intervention
Early intervention is a technique with the goal of motivating a child (or adult) who is abusing drugs or alcohol to want help for their addiction, rather then simply agreeing or submitting to it. The longer a parent waits, hoping that it's 'just a phase' and their son or daughter will grow out of it, the further your teen slips into a place where perceptions and judgment grow steadily distorted.

How to Choose A Drug Rehab Program
Choosing a drug rehab program for your teen is a complex and difficult undertaking. Your child is in crisis, and you must act quickly. Often, parents are not knowledgeable about drug rehab programs, or how to find a reputable one that is ideally designed to help your particular child. When substance abuse has become an integral aspect of your teen's life, time is essential, and you must quickly educate yourself about drug rehabilitation programs. The fastest way to do this is to read the information the facilities provide, and then know what questions to ask when you contact these facilities.

Learning Disabilities and Early Onset Alcoholism
New studies indicate a link between learning disabilities and alcoholism. Some researchers believe that chronic school failure and low self-esteem, the result of undiagnosed learning disabilities, may cause teens to start drinking as a form of self-medication. It may be important to address both the problem of chemical dependency and learning disabilities if a young adult can remain sober and lead a productive life.

Recovery Support - Helping Teens in Early Recovery
When teens enter treatment for drug abuse or alcoholism, the goal is always to help them quit completely. While some adults can learn to drink in moderation, this approach does not work with teens. For one thing, it is illegal for teens to drink or use drugs. In addition, new research points to the facts that the human brain does not completely develop until after age twenty or so, and alcohol has a more detrimental effect on immature brains.

Relapse Prevention
After your teenager has been sober for a while, steps must be taken to prevent a relapse. A relapse is the first time any person in recovery takes that first drink or drug. Parents and teenagers should be aware that a relapse never happens 'out of the blue'. There are always factors and warning signs that have led your teenager to taking that first drink or drug.

Substance Abuse Treatment for Teenagers
Substance abuse in teenagers requires a treatment plan tailored specifically to meet the needs of their age group. The teenager's entire framework must be taken into consideration, including the emotional, psychological, developmental, physical, familial, and cultural profiles. While substance abuse treatments focus on the addiction, other concurrent problems must also be addressed, including cross-addictions, eating disorders, behavioral problems, mental health, low self-esteem, anger management, anxiety disorders, depression, family dysfunction, and any history of physical or emotional abuse.

Why NorthStar?
NorthStar is one of the first young adult programs in the country. Our experience has shown that young adults usually overestimate their ability to reintegrate into the community after an effective primary or wilderness intervention.

Academics
NorthStar Academics are focused on helping students achieve independent academic success. To do this, we need to provide them with a supportive but honest assessment of their strengths and their weaknesses as we empower each student to take ownership of the direction of their lives. Whether the student left high school without finishing a diploma or GED, or whether he or she started college and dropped out, self-knowledge is key to independent functioning in educational settings.
