Academic Requirements

The academic requirements for Phase I of the NorthStar program include 10 required classes and at least 2 electives. Students begin their academic experience by developing, through self-assessment, a personal profile of their learning strengths. Once these activities are completed, students can begin taking classes required for success in the NorthStar community.

Required classes provide practical instruction in concepts that are essential to the NorthStar program. For example, recovery class and courses in dialectical behavior therapy ensure students understand the language and tools of the program’s therapeutic model. Personal money management and goal setting classes prepare students for their final six months at NorthStar (Phase II).

Electives allow students to select courses that support their plan for Phase II of the program. Because writing, computer technology, and study strategies are necessary for college success, electives are offered in these areas. But workplace coursework is also available for students who plan to work in Phase II. The courses are distributed over two 8-week sessions as follows:

First 8-week session
(Students take seven required courses)

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness Class
  • Personal Money Management Class
  • Art Class
  • Goal Setting and Time Class
  • Adult Wellness Class
  • HSC/GED (only required for students without high school diploma)

Second 8-week session
(Students choose two electives, *Seminar and Emotional Regulation are required)
